The plant, worth £1bn (1.62bn), will be located on the site of a former coal-fired power plant that was shut down in the 1990s.

RWE npower will build the power plant in three years.

Energy minister Charles Hendry told the BBC that the Willington plant will play an important role in providing secure electricity supplies.

“Gas plants like Willington will continue to be a central part in the country’s energy mix as we make a move towards a low-carbon economy,” Hendry said.
